Artist's Comments

scratchboard

I was sick today and had to stay home from school, was shit bored so i slept all day until about 2pm sometime and woke up to a loud noise outside my window. i went outside and saw a large white cocky low down in a tea-tree in my yard. i ran inside and got some paper and a pencil and sketched him (camera is fucked so i wouldnt even bother with that) and he put up his crest for me for a few seconds. i managed to get a basic outline until he flew away which looked like his mate. i actually liked the sketch so i transferred it onto some scratchboard and carved it in a couple of hours having it result in this.

i think the beak is unproportioned and the crest too small but i like it anyways, a big change from copying photograpths and drawing from my head, havent done observational drawing in a while, exspecially with live models :)

no hardcore critic, this is a play around job, nothing i really put effort in to earn critique and i think i know where i go wrong. thank you

OH, the tilt of his head is just PERFECT! The crest isn't too small, just too thin. It's fine. Pretty. :aww:

the crest feathers arnt actually wide, this cocky had them really spread so they didnt look wide and id know since they are regulars at my door lol

:+fav: for the composition and the delicate crest feathers, which must require lots of control to do with the extra pressure applied onto the scratchboard.

If you ever told us I can't remember, but is the scratchboard you use made of cardboard or sheets of metal?

Oh no! That;s not what I meant, I'm sorry. I meant thin like... sparse. That's probably a better way to put it. You're most likely still right though.
